Founded by Imām Abū Hanīfah in the Iraqi region in the mid-2nd century, Hanafism is a large fiqhī//juridical sect that has been accepted and adopted in a wide geography with its unique method and principles. Maturidism, which was founded -according to general acceptance- by Imām Abū Hanīfa and developed into a systematic structure by Imām Māturīdī about two centuries later, is a theological school that has managed to reach communities living in various regions of the world in the historical process and to maintain its existence until today.
There is no doubt that the existence of these two sects, which have a holistic structure in terms of political and social aspects, in a political organization such as the Ottoman Empire, which offered the opportunity to live in a vast geography for centuries to communities of various beliefs and views, deserves to be researched separately.
Since its foundation, Selcuk University Faculty of Theology has organized a number of symposiums on Imām Māturīdī and Maturidism. “International Symposium on Imām Māturīdī and Māturīdī Studies”, “Problems and Suggestions on Māturīdī Studies”, “The Doctrine of Māturīdī and the Present Time”, “The Doctrine of Maturidism and the Present Time II” and “Hanafism-Maturidism in the Great Selçuk Period” will continue this year with an international symposium titled “Hanafism-Maturidism in the Ottoman Empire”.
The aim of the symposium is to discuss the general situation and the course of development of the Hanafi and Maturidi sects in the Ottoman Empire from different perspectives, and to reveal the works, views and contributions of Hanafi-Maturidi scholars living in that period to Islamic thought. We would be honored and happy to welcome scholars from Turkey and abroad to our symposium in Konya, our ancient city, to contribute to our symposium with their original works.
